Pair of William Iv/early Victorian Bristol Blue Mell Decanters

19th century
Description

This is a pair of William IV/early Victorian, mouth-blown, Bristol blue glass mell decanters dating from the early to mid 19th century, c1835/1840.

The decanters are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show the age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases consistent with some 180 years of use. There are polished pontil marks to the underside of the bases.

The decanters have been mouth-blown in Bristol blue glass. The decanters measure 15.5 cm (6.2 inches) in diameter at their widest points and are 22 cm (8.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any evidence of restoration. They come with matching white metal and cork stoppers for Claret and Brandy.

Each decanter weighs in at 670 g. (~ 1 lb. 8 oz.).

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Bristol blue glass refers to dark cobalt lead glass produced predominantly in Bristol, England, from the late 18th to the 19th century. These decanters were widely used during the Georgian, William IV, and Victorian eras to serve spirits, wines, and fortified liquors at formal dining tables.

They were hand-blown using cobalt oxide added to the glass mixture to produce the distinct deep blue hue. Stopper designs frequently featured cork stoppers fitted with metal or silver-plated ring tops inscribed with the name of the intended beverage.

Authentic pieces generally display pontil marks on the base where the glassmaker rod was detached, alongside minor surface wear consistent with age. When held to a strong light source, genuine Bristol blue exhibits a translucent deep cobalt tone rather than a modern surface coating.

Position a pair of glass decanters on a dark wood sideboard, a marble-topped bar cart, or an open dining room shelf. Grouping them alongside metallic objects or clear crystal creates a visual balance that catches natural light.

Hand wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals or mechanical dishwashers. Ensure the interior is dry before inserting cork stoppers to prevent moisture retention and material breakdown.
