Decanter boxes gained immense popularity during the Victorian era as a sophisticated way to store and display alcoholic beverages in middle and upper-class homes, often secured by a lock to restrict access to domestic staff.

These boxes were typically constructed from a sturdy timber frame veneered in decorative woods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, frequently accented with brass banding, escutcheons, and fitted with velvet or silk interiors to cradle cut-glass decanters.

Authentic pieces generally feature period-correct joinery, hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and hand-blown or early press-moulded crystal decanters with pontil marks on the base.

An antique decanter box can be placed on a sideboard or bar cart as a functional focal point, adding texture, warmth, and historic character to a modern entertaining space.

Protect the wood from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent veneer cracking, and apply a microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish and maintain the finish.
