Georgian cream jugs evolved significantly during the 18th century alongside the growing popularity of tea and coffee drinking in British society, shifting from simple pear-shaped vessels to more elaborate neoclassical and embossed designs.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver and finished with a process known as silver gilt or vermeil, where a thin layer of gold is applied to the interior or exterior surface using mercury amalgamation or electroplating in later periods.

Authenticity is primarily verified through clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include the makers mark, standard mark indicating silver purity, duty mark, and a date letter corresponding to the assay office.

Antique silver items add a layer of historical contrast and reflective metallic texture when displayed on open shelving, sideboards, or paired with contemporary minimalist ceramics.

Silver gilt items require careful handling to avoid wearing down the delicate gold layer; they should be cleaned gently with a soft microfibre cloth and specialized non-abrasive silver cleaner, avoiding harsh chemical dips.
