This Georgian sterling silver cream jug by makers Nathaniel Appleton and Ann Smith dates from 1776 during the reign of George III. The piece takes a classic bulbous form on a pedestal foot, rendered in polished silver with a reflective metallic grey colour throughout. Distinctive details include a scalloped rim, an elaborately scrolled handle with lower scroll terminals, and intricate beaded mouldings edging both the rim and the circular foot base. Maker and assay hallmarks are visibly stamped near the top interior rim below the spout. Measuring approximately 10 cm in height, 10 cm from the handle edge to the front of the spout, and 6 cm across the middle, the vessel weighs 81.5 grams. In a contemporary interior, this collectible antique is suited for display on a dining table, sideboard, or display cabinet, and can be used functionally to serve cream during afternoon tea.

Georgian sterling silver cream jugs, produced during the reigns of George I through George IV, typically feature classic baluster or helmet forms set on pedestal or tripod bases. These small vessels were standard components of formal tea and coffee services during the eighteenth century.

These jugs were crafted from sterling silver (925 fineness) using traditional silversmithing methods, including hand-raising sheet metal and soldering attached elements such as handles and foot rings. Decorative details were applied using punchwork, chasing, or die-stamping.

Authentic George III silver carries a complete set of British hallmarks: the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling purity, a town mark such as Londons leopard head, and a specific date letter. The surfaces display characteristic hand-hammering marks and natural light surface patination consistent with period age.

A Georgian silver jug serves as an accent piece on a sideboard, coffee table tray, or mantlepiece shelf. It can be displayed independently within a collection of period hollowware or repurposed as a small bud vase for fresh florals.

Maintain silver by wiping with a soft, non-abrasive cotton cloth and using specialised silver polish only when necessary to remove tarnish without stripping patination. Store in tarnish-resistant cloth bags away from direct moisture and harsh ambient chemicals.
