Georgian Silver Cream Jug

18th century
Description

A good example of a Sterling Silver milk or cream jug dating from the late 18th / early 19th Century. It is an elegant design with a beautifully curved pouring spout and delicate engraved bands of decoration. There is a cartouche on the front engraved with the initials B.L.

The jug is good quality, weighing approximately 84g. There is no discernible hallmark, either it has worn or been covered during a repair but it is certainly an English piece and has tested as sterling silver.

It is in good condition for its age. There are some faint surface marks, small dinks and signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. There have been some repairs and it is likely a piece of silver has been put over the cartouche to hide old initials at some point but it still displays well. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian silver cream jug typically dates from 1714 to 1830, characterised by elegant neoclassical proportions, bright-cut engraving, or repousse floral ornamentation designed for traditional tea service.

These vessels were crafted from sterling silver, comprising 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper for structural durability, often hand-hammered and finished with engraved or chased details.

Authenticity is verified by checking for official British hallmarks, which include a monarchs head duty mark, a makers mark, a purity mark such as the lion passant, and a date letter.

An antique silver cream jug functions as a decorative accent on a dining table, coffee table tray, or open kitchen shelving, often repurposed as a small vase for fresh floral stems.

Maintain sterling silver by polishing gently with a specialised silver cloth and mild silver foam, avoiding abrasive cleaners or dishwashers to protect the delicate surface patina.
