Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, emerged in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement, allowing for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

These clocks are typically constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and glass door panels.

Authenticity is evaluated by inspecting the hand-engraved dial details, the integration of the movement with the wooden seat board, cabinet joinery techniques, and maker signatures.

A tall case clock serves as a strong vertical anchor in a hallway, living room, or study, contrasting effectively against minimalist walls or traditional architectural details.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, keeping the movement professionally serviced every few years, and avoiding direct sunlight on the wood finish.
