This 18th century Chinese Qing Dynasty coffer chest belongs to the Gentleman's Library style and has an 18th-century origin. The piece is constructed from dark brown hardwood combined with iron and leather, presenting a dark brown timber finish with visible structural age splits, expected surface losses, and un-restored wear. Decorative elements include iron studding along the structural edges, corner metal mounts, and a central hasp and staple latch, complemented by side drop-handles mounted on the left exterior. The chest measures 64 cm high, 83.8 cm wide, and 54.6 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this storage chest functions as an accent piece in a study, library, or living space to hold books, blankets, or keepsakes while doubling as a decorative surface. The hinged lid opens via the original metalwork, showing loose ringed handles when closing. The traditional joinery, heavy corner braces, and nail-studded trim lend an industrial yet historic appearance suitable for period and eclectic interiors.

Traditional Chinese coffers were crafted during the Qing dynasty primarily for the secure storage of textiles, valuables, and domestic items. These pieces frequently feature dense timber joinery, protective iron studding, and functional metal fittings.

These trunks were constructed from regional hardwoods and reinforced with forged iron straps, corner mounts, and iron studs. Traditional joinery methods, such as mortise-and-tenon joints, were used without reliance on modern metal screws or adhesives.

Authentic period coffers display hand-forged iron hardware with natural surface oxidation, hand-cut timber joinery, and wear on the base and handles. Original iron studs and hand-hammered latch plates also indicate historical craftsmanship.

A patinated hardwood coffer functions effectively as a focal piece at the foot of a bed, as a low coffee table, or within an entryway. Combining textured dark timber with neutral contemporary fabrics balances historical character with modern decor.

Dust the item regularly using a soft, dry cloth to prevent catching on metal studs or fittings. Position the chest away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the hardwood from warping or shrinking.
