Description

A superb example of a Eureka Clock made c1912.

The electromagnetic movement is regulated by a large, slowly oscillating bi-metallic balance wheel, with the correct battery these clock will run for the duration of the battery life. Housed in a brass four glass case with doors to the front and back, the movement is visible from all sides so the oscillation can be seen. The movement is numbered 8348 and stamped with the patent no 14614/1906 Made in England

The Eureka clock was invented by Timothy Bernard Powers in New York shortly after 1900, and the Patent granted in 1906. It is thought that by the Eureka Clock Company, London made around 10,000 clocks between 1908 and 1914. This short period of production means that this type of clock is a rare survivor.

The large visible balance wheel oscillates through a 270°s (see video) with a smooth mesmeric action that is delight to watch this and its rarity make this clock a favourite with collectors.

A four-glass clock is a type of mantel clock housed in a brass and glass case with bevelled glass panels on all four sides, allowing a clear view of the clock movement from multiple angles, popularised during the late Victorian and Edwardian periods.

These clocks typically feature heavy cast brass or gilded brass frames combined with thick plate glass panels, enamelled dials with Roman numerals, and intricate brass mechanical or electromechanical movements.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct patent markings, maker signatures on the dial or backplate, original mercury or balance wheel assemblies, and traditional hand-cut brass gears rather than modern replacement components.

Place the clock on a flat surface such as a mantelpiece, sideboard, or desk where light can pass through the glass panels, pairing it with minimalist surroundings to highlight its intricate internal mechanics.

Keep the clock out of direct sunlight and away from damp environments, clean the exterior brass gently with a soft microfibre cloth without abrasive polishes, and have the movement professionally serviced every few years.
