FAQs

Chinese lacquered furniture involves applying multiple coats of processed sap from the lacquer tree to a wooden base, a technique perfected over millennia for durability and lustrous finish. During the Qing dynasty, provincial workshops in regions like Fujian developed distinct local styles featuring intricate gold gilt and carved relief panels depicting landscapes and figures.

Authentic antique pieces are typically constructed using traditional joinery methods that bypass metal nails, often utilising softwoods such as elm, pine, or fir as a substrate for numerous layers of natural lacquer. Brass or bronze hardware, including distinctive pin locks and decorative hinges, is traditionally hand-forged and fitted.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of the natural wear patterns in the lacquer, the presence of traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and the chemical composition of the lacquer layers. Genuine older pieces display natural cracking, known as craquelure, along with hand-carved details and patination consistent with age and provincial use.

These cabinets serve as strong statement pieces and function well as focal points in minimalist or contemporary spaces to provide a contrasting texture and historical depth. Pairing the rich red and gilt tones with neutral walls and modern lighting allows the craftsmanship and hand-painted details to stand out without overwhelming the room.

Lacquer requires stable environmental conditions with controlled humidity and temperature to prevent cracking or warping of the wooden substrate. Dusting should be performed gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding modern chemical polishes, solvents, or direct sunlight which can degrade the fragile finish.
