This pair of large decorative Japanese Imari vases belongs to the 1900 period. Formed from porcelain with enamel and gold leaf, the pieces present a palette of cobalt blue, rust red, green, and white. The glaze displays detailed floral panels, iron-red foliage, trees, leaves, flowers, and pots, finished with a fluted rim and a ribbed base. One vase features a repair to the top. Each vase measures 32.5 cm high, 20 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, offering a substantial presence for display. In a contemporary home, this pair suits placement on a sideboard top within an English Country House interior setting.

Originating from the Arita region in Japan and exported via the port of Imari, this style of porcelain gained immense popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, characterised by its distinct underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze iron red palette complemented by gilded detailing.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin clay porcelain, decorated with dark cobalt blue underglaze paint, kiln-fired, and subsequently painted with overglaze enamel colours such as iron-red, orange, and gold before a final low-temperature firing.

Look for characteristic signs of authentic craftsmanship, such as an underglaze blue and overglaze enamel palette, subtle hand-painted variations in pattern, ribbed or fluted porcelain moulding, and evidence of historic age on unglazed base rims or foot rings.

Position a pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or entry console table to introduce rich colour, complex pattern, and a refined historical focal point that contrasts elegantly with neutral contemporary settings.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals or soaking in water, as moisture and harsh cleaning agents can strip delicate overglaze gilding and enamel work.
