Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century slate perpetual calendar clock is a mechanical timepiece encased in dark slate or marble, featuring an additional calendar mechanism that automatically accounts for the varying lengths of months and leap years.

These timepieces were typically crafted using dense Belgian black slate or Nero Marquina marble, fitted with brass movements, hand-engraved gilded brass or bronze faceplates, and enamelled dials with glass covers.

Authentic period examples exhibit significant physical weight due to the solid stone casing, along with hand-engraved gilt detailing, traditional pendulum-driven mechanical movements, and aged patina on the brass components.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive office desk, or dark wood sideboard, balanced with minimalist brass accessories or framed monochrome prints.

Dust the slate casing regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, and apply small amounts of mineral oil or specialist marble polish to restore its deep luster, while having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every five years.
