Regency Mahogany Cellarette by Robsons of Newcastle

19th century
Description

This is an impressive good quality Regency mahogany cellaret of sarcophagus form by Robson & sons of Newcastle dating from around 1840. The handsome piece is in flame mahogany veneer with a good colour and richly figured grain with fabulous solid mahogany hairy paw feet. The lead liner is present and the piece is raised on recessed brass castors.

Robson & sons were cabinet makers of the highest standard. They started business in the William IV period, the style of that era much reflected in this piece. The company was founded at 42 Northumberland Street Newcastle by Robert after serving an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker and upholsterer. His two sons later came into the business which went on to create fine furniture for hotels churches and large ocean liners that were being built on the Tyne. After Robert’s death the sons opened a large factory employing over 200 people. Robson and sons carried on for four generations before finally being taken over by the Maple group in 1953.

This cellaret is a fine and substantial example of their early work. It would make a superb coffee table or statement piece as it is a very practical size measuring 95 cms wide 60 cms high by 56 cms deep.

UK delivery can be arranged with our local courier and costs £70 plus vat to most areas.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
