N Wilson Antiques Clocks has dated this Gilt Bronze Desk Clock to the 19th Century.
The watch section has a lovely twisted edge around the dial flanked by stunning champleve enamel decoration showing flowers in lovely bright, blues, greens, pinks, and yellows. The watch section then opens to allow the clock to be wound and has a wonderful turned spire to the centre. Finally the whole thing has a lovely shaped base that is signed to the back “JONES, 23, BOULEVART DES CAPUCINES”. This shows the case was made by Thomas Jones who was an English merchant from London, also owned a store at 23, boulevard des Capucines in Paris, where he was listed from 1878 to 1905 as a manufacturer of travel bags, suitcases, brushes and perfumery, he was also a stationery, jewelry and other articles. He won three silver medals for perfumery in 1878 and 1889.
The dial of the clock is then enamel and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring to the outside marking the minutes. The dial then has a small subsidiary dial showing the seconds marked in Arabic numerals. The dial then has three lovely shaped fingers. Finally the dial is signed “Barwise LONDON 8563” which matches the stamps to the movement.
The movement is then wound from the back and adjusted with the same key to the front. It is ticking away and working as it should. It is a chain fusee example of the upmost quality! The movement, and cover are then signed by the maker “Barwise LONDON 8563”. Barwise & Sons were an esteemed clockmaking family, having held the royal warrant as clockmaker to King George II from c.1820. John Barwise Jnr. was also an inaugural director of the British Watch and Clockmakers Company in c.1842.
