Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning original antique French clock by the illustrious maker Charles Hour. It is of the beautifully restrained Empire design in a sumptuous green variegated specimen marble and ormolu (finely gilded bronze). To the top is a beautifully modelled spread eagle. The case is glazed with beveled glass to four sides to allow the mercury compensated pendulum to be seen gently swinging.

The dial is porcelain enamel with it's original blued steel Breguet hands.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Charles Hour. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original, we have replaced the mercury with silver steel for safety. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a sonorous gong. We have a video of the clock running, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration. The dial is also in excellent condition with no damage. The marble is also excellent with just some slight nibbles to the edges. There are some small chips to the corners of the glass panels and a light scratch on the front door.

Charles Hour marks on the movement backplate

Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today, began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing manufacture and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France. Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the 19th century, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees.

Complete with original pendulum and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.

The Empire style emerged in France during the early 19th century under Napoleon, drawing heavy inspiration from classical Greek and Roman antiquity with motifs such as wreaths, eagles, and classical columns.

These timepieces typically utilised fire-gilt bronze, known as ormolu, combined with natural hardstones like marble, alongside bevelled glass panels to showcase the internal mechanical movement.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining the quality of the mercury-gilded bronze, hand-painted enamel dials, stamped serial numbers on the brass clock movement, and the presence of hand-cut bevelled glass.

Positioning the clock on a clean-lined mantelpiece or a contemporary sideboard creates a striking focal point, contrasting historical craftsmanship with modern minimalist design.

Maintain the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the gilt bronze surfaces, and having the mechanical movement professionally serviced every few years.
