This late 19th-century French Provincial buffet de corps from 1880 is made of solid oak with a distressed whitewashed finish over the natural timber grain. The substantial two-tier storage cabinet stands 259 cm high, 168 cm wide, and 56 cm deep. The upper section displays arched cornicing topped by a central carved shell pediment, two moulded panel doors with intricate floral and scroll relief carvings, and turned column supports at the sides. Brass hardware secures the doors, including small keyhole escutcheons and drop handles. The lower section echoes the design with a pair of cupboard doors featuring similar raised carved panels, resting on carved claw feet. Visible signs of age include weathering and fading in the whitewashed finish that reveals warmer wood tones underneath. This imposing piece provides prominent storage in a grand dining room, spacious hallway, or living space to house tableware, linens, and display decorative items.

A buffet deux corps is a classic two-tier French storage cabinet featuring a deeper base section surmounted by a slightly recessed upper section. Originating in French regional cabinetmaking, these pieces traditionally feature two doors on each tier and ornamental hand-carved motifs.

French provincial furniture was predominantly crafted from solid native hardwoods such as oak, walnut, and fruitwood. Construction features peg joinery, hand-mortised frames, and deeply carved relief panels often inspired by Parisian court styles.

Authentic pieces feature pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed backboards, original brass or iron hardware, and regional carving motifs such as Rococo shells, scrollwork, and arched door mouldings.

A large French cabinet serves as a focal architectural piece in a dining room, kitchen, or entrance hall. Neutral or limed finishes complement contemporary soft colour palettes while introducing texture and historical weight to modern spaces.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical sprays. To preserve distressed or whitewashed surface finishes, apply a clear beeswax paste sparingly with a soft brush, buffing gently to protect the underlying timber.
