FAQs

Victorian furniture spans the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and encompasses various revivals, incorporating substantial proportions, dark woods such as walnut and mahogany, and intricate hand-carved ornamentation.

Cabinet makers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and oak, frequently pairing wooden carcases with inset marble tops to provide a durable, water-resistant surface for washing equipment and water jugs.

Authentic pieces exhibit traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on drawer boxes, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, hand-carved decorative motifs, and original brass or bronze hardware rather than modern fixings.

An antique bedside cabinet adds character and textural contrast to modern bedrooms when paired with clean-lined contemporary lighting and minimalist bedding, grounding the space with historical craftsmanship.

Preserve the timber and finish by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically applying quality beeswax to nourish the wood and maintain its natural lustre.
