This Victorian 19th-century wall clock originates from the gentleman's library style tradition and is constructed from warm brown mahogany, brass, and glass. The circular timepiece features a turned timber surround, a solid cast brass bezel, and a convex dial displaying black Roman numerals. The white dial is signed with the maker's inscription, Thos Gibbs Stratford, and includes two winding keyholes positioned below the centre hands. Additionally, a brass hinge is visible on the right side of the bezel, along with a hanging loop and a small regulating key attached near the bottom of the wooden case. The piece measures 33 cm in height and is suited for placement on a narrow wall space in a home study, hallway, or living area. It functions as both a decorative focal point and a timekeeping instrument, operating on an eight-day duration movement that strikes the hours on a bell. The traditional aesthetic complements period interiors and office settings, bringing classic British horological history into daily use.

A dial clock is a wall-mounted clock featuring a circular dial set within a turned wooden surround, widespread in Britain during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Originally manufactured for public institutions, railway stations, and commercial premises, these timepieces relied on mechanical clockwork driven by weight or spring fusee movements.

Victorian dial clocks typically feature cast iron or sheet steel painted dials, cast brass bezels holding protective glass, and surrounds turned from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Internal movements were constructed predominantly from brass plates and steel arbors.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut gear teeth, cast brass components, and natural hand-turned timber casing with age-appropriate wear around keyholes and hinges. Dial signatures, maker names, and location markings painted directly onto the original enamel or painted dial face also assist in verification.

A mahogany dial clock functions as a focal point when hung in an entryway, study, or hallway above a console or sideboard. The deep timber tones contrast with neutral wall palettes, balancing contemporary minimalist schemes with structured historical texture.

Keep the timber surround dusted with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain to maintain moisture balance. Mechanical movements require periodic servicing by a qualified horologist and should be positioned away from damp conditions, direct sunlight, and heat radiators.
