Fine Edwards and Roberts Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality Chinese Chippendale style mahogany display cabinet from the renown workshops of Edwards & Roberts.The polished top having pierced three quarter gallery with a fabulous carved centre. The frieze having shallow carved scrolling fauna above the profusely carved and canted corners with blind fret decoration. The sides and door have decoratively shaped frames with plate glass panels, and the door opens to reveal 3 adjustable plate glass shelves with brass supports. This stunning cabinet is raised on cabriole legs again with fine carved detail. Condition - very good and original with working lock & key.

Label to the back for Edwards & Roberts, Wardour St. 126, Piccadilly, 532, Oxford St. London.

The firm Edwards and Roberts were among the best English antique furniture cabinet makers of the second half of the nineteenth century. The company was founded in 1845 and by 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards and Roberts at 21 Wardour Street, London. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers and the firm produced high quality furniture, as well as good copies of the 18th and 19th century English and French pieces. There workmanship included pieces with satinwood marquetry and favoured the Georgian designs. The quality of timber used was always the best quality with fine burr walnuts, finely figured mahogany and lighter toned satinwood.
