Black Forest Table / Bracket Clock

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A lovely clean and totally original Black Forest oak clock in Cathedral, Gothic Revival style.

The case has floral, bulbous finial-like towers and the ogival shaped central case section decorated at the front with floral designs. This undulating central section encloses the bevelled glass brass bezel, with Gothic tear drop finials separating the rose coloured panels below the dial, and all flanked by corner case columns essentially wrapped in what are stylised flying buttresses. Below is a broad concave and stepped architectural base. The sides of the case also exhibit Gothic wooden panels with a door at the back also in the beehive shape with rectilinear rose glass panel.

The wooden, carved dial has bas style relief fretwork around the porcelain cartouche Roman numerals.

The 8 day French movement is signed "O. Berger, Paris. It strikes on the half-hour and the hour on a silvered bell and has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered staff.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating predominantly in southwestern Germany, Black Forest bracket clocks are distinguished by elaborate hand-carved wooden cases housing mechanical movements.

These timepieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or lime, fitted with brass mechanical movements and enamel or brass dials.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved architectural details, natural age-related patina, traditional joinery, and original mechanical brass clockwork.

Position the clock on a dark wood mantelpiece, console table, or library bookshelf to serve as an architectural statement piece.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources, clear dust regularly using a soft dry brush, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
