Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An eight-day longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, weight-driven floor clock designed to run for eight days between windings. Developed in the seventeenth century, mahogany became the preferred timber for high-quality cases during the eighteenth century due to its stability and deep colour.

Georgian longcase clock cabinets were primarily crafted from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over oak. Inlays were composed of contrasting woods such as satinwood or boxwood, while internal movements used brass plates and wheels paired with iron weights and steel arbors.

Authentic longcase clocks feature hand-cut joinery, period-correct movement constructions, and natural wear patterns around keyholes and hinges. Brass dials on eighteenth-century examples feature cast corner spandrels and engraved chapter rings rather than stamped or printed components.

A longcase clock serves as a strong architectural anchor when positioned in an entryway, formal hallway, or library. Pairing the classical mahogany case with minimalist modern seating or neutral wall tones creates a balanced, curated contrast.

The mechanical movement should be serviced every three to five years by a professional horologist and wound weekly using the correct key. The mahogany case should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and polished occasionally with beeswax.
