Superb Quality Large Japanese Meiji Period Shodana Cabinet with Lacquered Shibyama Panels

A late 19th century superb quality large Japanese Meiji period shodana cabinet with lacquered shibyama panels.

The shodana (cabinet) consists of an arrangement of asymmetrical cupboards and shelves with a combination of fourteen superb quality shibyama panels, doors and drawers of figures, birds, flowers and foliage.

The shibyama panels all have an exquisite gold lacquered background with applied ivory, bone and mother of pearl to create decorative scenes influenced by nature.

The cabinet also consists of many profusely pierced carvings of flowers, foliage and birds both to the front and sides. This is also replicated in the carved, pierced and shaped base which is superbly carved with flowers and foliage with a large carved lotus flower to the centre of the frieze.

The lotus flower is associated with purity and beauty, spiritual awakening and faithfulness. The lotus flower is revered in Japan for its ability to rise from murky waters to bloom into a beautiful pure flower - this process symbolizes attaining enlightenment.

This cabinet displays the exquisite workmanship from the Meiji period and is an ideal piece for displaying fine collections of objets d'art.

Shibyama is the process of applying pieces of mother of pearl, ivory and stones etc to a surface and then surrounding it with lacquer work.

This shodana is in excellent condition with no losses which is very unusual and can go straight into a home or collection.
