Description

Circa 1920, unusual cabinet on stand by Whytock & Reid of Edinburgh (makers stamp in two locations inside) which has been made from various woods. The top section has a long ebonised rectangular top with rounded corners and a gilded fore edge. Beneath this at the front are three doors with fielded panels which are veneered in coromandel wood. The beading on the doors is ebonised and the next section is painted red. Each of the doors open to show a variety of shelving combinations and have locks by Langebear & Co of Birmingham. The top section sits on a classic Whytock & Reid base with Lorimer influences. The base has been gilded and has a deep apron at the front with a Chinoiserie pattern. At each end are square tapering legs with a reeded section at the front and chamfered at the back. These are united by shaped cross stretchers which rise up and have an ebonised shelf in the centre, enclosed by a gilded frame. The cabinet finishes on very stylish Whytock & Reid feet. Unusual piece which is very stylish and top quality.
