Arrowsmith Antiques & Interiors has dated this piece to the 1870s.
The writing surface has a tan coloured hide leather fitted.

The outside of the Cabinet is ebonised with brass inlay stringing to the sides. The front of the Cabinet is beautifully inlaid with fine decoration of mother of pearl and brass and finished with very good quality bronze gilt mounts. All five drawers are oak lined.

The top has an inset black marble top.
This Escritoire is attributed to the cabinet maker Monbro.
Georges Alphonse Bonifacio Monbro was born in Paris in 1807 and died in 1884. He worked at Rue Basse du Rempart in Paris before moving to Soho, London in 1861 where he then worked from Frith Street. Monbro specialised in boulle inlay work. Examples of Monbro's work can be found at The Musee D'Orsay and the Bowes Collection in Bernard Castle
