Description

FINE and very RARE Late 17th century yew-wood veneered cabinet on ORIGINAL stand. The stand with solid yew-wood barley twist legs united by moulded stretchers with cushion mould to the top, the top part of the stand with carved corner brackets.

The top section veneered in yew-wood and fruitwood. The wide bandings and mouldings are all fruitwood. The ends are burr yew-wood. The doors are a fabulous grain yew-wood that must have been cut in a certain way to get the grain pattern. The inside of the doors are wonderful yew-wood oysters. The interior fully fitted with all the original doors and cupboards etc, all in yew-wood, the drawers lined in walnut.

Both the locks are original spring type locks so the doors are opened with the key in both cases. The door hinges are old replacements, originally it would have had pin hinges top and bottom. The whole piece is a wonderful colour. It has had various minor restorations over the years but nothing serious and the pine framing of the stand shows signs of old worm.

The only point worth mentioning is some of the interior drawers have been shortened in length by about 1/4" - 3/8" sometime in the 19th century due to carcass shrinkage, I expect they stuck out too much so the doors wouldn't close, but only an expert would even notice this.

My personal opinion is it is probably Flemish in origin, certainly the locks are very much Flemish in style.

With out any doubt, the best piece of yew-wood furniture I have ever handled.

SIZE; 30" wide, 18" from front to back and 5 foot high.
