Georgian Convex Dial Fusee Wall Clock, York

18th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to present for your consideration a fine 18th century Georgian eight day fusee timepiece dial clock. Finished in lovely mahogany with the narrow wooden surround typical of its time this is a stunning piece of furniture dating from circa 1783.

The photos are of the unfinished clock, many more photos to follow and availability towards the end of November.

The case has a lovely patina and is of a standard pegged design with the surround pegged to the back box. The original cast bezel closes and locks firmly and frames the lovely twelve inch convex dial within the turned surround perfectly; elegant, high quality steel hands finish off the glorious appearance. The maker's name is present -

John Agar, York. There are two John Agars, this is the work of the son who was apprenticed to his father in 1766 and made Free in 1782 in York. By 1784 he had moved to work in Malton, he pre-deceased his father in 1814.

There is both a lower door and side door to the case and the eight day, high-quality movement, which has tapered shoulders to the plates (typical of the period), has just been serviced with new line fitted and comes with my three year worldwide guarantee as standard. An original fusee 'butterfly' key accompanies this rare piece.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Hand-cut dovetails at the box corners: cabinet work before machine-cut joints arrived.
Narrow turned mahogany surround: late 18th-century proportions before wider Victorian rims became standard.
Deep cast brass bezel with convex glass: fits late Georgian styling.
Pegged rim fixing through to the box: traditional assembly before screw fittings.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A Georgian fusee wall clock is an English spring-driven timepiece originating from the 18th to early 19th century, incorporating a conical fusee mechanism designed to equalise the torque of the mainspring for accurate timekeeping.

These clocks typically feature a solid turned mahogany casing, a hand-painted iron or convex dial, polished brass bezels, convex glass, and cast brass gear trains within the movement.

Authentic period examples generally display hand-painted dial lettering often featuring the clockmakers name and location, heavy brass movement plates connected by pillars, a wooden salt-box style back case, and natural age-related patina on the timber and metalwork.

Position the clock as a focal point above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall arrangement, allowing the warm mahogany tones and brass accents to contrast against neutral or dark backdrop walls.

Keep the clock in a dry, temperature-stable environment away from direct heat sources. Dust the exterior case using a soft dry cloth and consult a professional horologist for periodic servicing of the mechanical movement every five to seven years.
