Arts & Crafts, Westminster-chime, Golden Oak Wall Clock

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A really stunning example of these ever popular wall clocks from the Arts & Crafts period. Further enhanced by the strike of the Westminster-Chime on the quarters and the hour.

The oak case is beautifully polished with that hint of a nice age related patina. The fully opening front door has bevelled glass panels to the lower half, allowing the pendulum to be seen working.

The 8" silvered dial has black Arabic numerals, nicely cut hands, and a brass surround.

The 8 day movement strikes the Westminster-Chime on the quarters and the hour. It has just been fully serviced by our BHI registered horologist and carries our usual 12mths full parts and labour guarantee. Importantly, it strikes on steel rods, giving a very crisp, clear tone. It is fitted with a STRIKE/SILENT facility.

A really delightful, charming clock that is ready to go straight to work.

This Arts and Crafts wall clock dates from the 1930 period and exhibits a warm brown golden oak timber construction with a polished finish. The design incorporates a carved shell motif on the pediment, beaded moulding along the side pillars, a circular brass dial with black Arabic numerals, and a glass-fronted lower section that displays the brass pendulum within. The case measures 80 cm high, 34 cm wide, and 18 cm deep, housing a mechanical movement with black-cut hands. Visible details include key winding arbors on the dial face and vertical timber divisions within the glazed lower door. Suitable for placement on narrow wall spaces in an English country house interior, this clock functions as both a timekeeper and a decorative wall feature. It mounts directly onto a wall surface where the pendulum movement remains visible through the lower glass panels while the clock operates. The wood shows natural grain patterns across the front facade, complemented by the circular metal bezel surrounding the dial and the visible brass pendulum bob suspended inside the lower compartment.

Arts & Crafts wall clocks are defined by an emphasis on natural timber grain, honest construction methods, and restrained carved ornamentation. Originating as a reaction against mass industrialisation, pieces from this movement feature architectural proportions, solid wood joinery, and prominent brass or copper dials.

Oak is the predominant timber utilised in modern and historic Arts & Crafts clock cases, often selected for its prominent medullary rays and figure. Internal movements consist of brass plates, steel pinions, and cast brass pendulums, housed behind glass-fronted aperture panels.

Authentic pieces display period-correct mechanical movements, traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints, and original dial patination. Look for stamped manufacturer trademarks on the rear brass movement plate and natural signs of timber aging.

Mount the clock against a neutral or muted wall colour to allow the rich tones of the golden oak case to stand out. It serves as a structural focal point when placed in entrance halls, corridors, or above tailored cabinetry alongside contemporary art.

Mechanical clocks require regular winding using the correct size key and periodic professional lubrication of the brass movement every three to five years. The wooden case should be dusted with a dry cloth and kept away from direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent timber warping.
