A Victorian centrepiece by Osler, dating from circa 1870, functions as a dining table centre. This English Country House object is manufactured from clear cut glass and silver-plated metal, displaying a colour palette of clear and silver. The design incorporates a central diamond-cut bowl with scalloped rims, surrounded by four matching smaller glass holders mounted on branched scroll arms above a fluted pedestal and round base. Fine details include intricate diamond-cut patterns across the glass bodies and ornate silver-plated metalwork linking the arms to the base. Measuring 28x28x23 cm, this item sits appropriately as a focal point in the middle of a dining table. Placement suits a formal dining room or living space where it serves as a decorative centrepiece, holding floral arrangements or small decorative items within its glass vessels. The transparent glass and reflective silver plating catch ambient light, adding a polished presence to interior surfaces. Maintenance involves careful cleaning of the glass and gentle wiping of the silver-plated hardware to preserve the finish.

FAQs

An epergne is an elaborate dining table centrepiece designed to hold flowers, fruit, or sweetmeats. During the Victorian era, these decorative pieces featured central bowls surrounded by branching arms that supported smaller glass dishes or trumpet-shaped vases.

High-grade lead crystal and hand-cut glass were predominantly used for the bowls and trumpets. The structural frames and branched arms were typically constructed from sterling silver, silver plate, gilt bronze, or cast brass.

Authentic pieces feature sharp, hand-cut glass facets rather than smooth moulded edges, and often exhibit minor hand-blown irregularities. Metal mounts frequently carry manufacturer marks or hallmarks, and the separate glass elements should fit precisely into their designated metal sockets.

Place the item as a central focal point on a large dining table, sideboard, or entrance hall table. It can be displayed empty to showcase the cut crystal facets or filled with minimal floral arrangements to contrast against contemporary decor.

Clean glass components using warm water with mild liquid detergent and dry thoroughly with a soft lint-free cloth. Metal elements should be gently polished with a specialised silver cloth, avoiding abrasive cleaners that could strip the plating or damage surrounding glass fittings.
