This pair of Victorian Arts & Crafts vases dates from 1880 and takes the form of glazed stoneware ceramic vessels with slender, fluted necks, flared rims, and bulbous bodies raised on circular bases. The smooth glaze displays a rich palette of ochre, golden brown, cobalt blue, green, and white, enriched with moulded floral relief scrolling, blue and green swags, and white blossoms, complemented by leaf detailing at the base and rim. Each piece measures 29.5 cm high, 12 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Positioned on a mantelpiece, this decorative pair adds period character to a living room, study, or hallway surface. The vessels stand upright on a flat wooden display surface, catching the ambient light across their polished ceramic finish while maintaining a symmetrical arrangement suitable for interior styling.

FAQs

Doulton Lambeth stoneware refers to art pottery produced at the Royal Doulton factory in Lambeth, London, primarily between the 1870s and 1914. Renowned for individual artist decoration, these ceramics feature salt glazes, incised patterns, and hand-applied relief embellishments.

Victorian stoneware was crafted from dense clay fired at high temperatures, producing a non-porous and durable body. Decorative elements were typically executed using slip-casting, sprigging, tubelining, or incising before being finished with mineral-based glazes such as cobalt blue and iron-brown.

Authentic pieces feature impressed factory marks on the underside, including the Doulton Lambeth rosette or oval stamp. They often include incised or stamped monograms of the individual artist and assistant alongside shape numbers.

A pair of stoneware vases works well symmetrical on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or consolidated within a curated shelf display. Their earthy tones and glossy finishes pair effectively with dark wood, natural linen, and muted modern colour palettes.

Clean glazed stoneware with a soft cloth and lukewarm water containing mild liquid soap. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemicals, or submerging pieces in water, particularly if there are fine structural crazing lines.
