Pair Royal Doulton Art Nouveau Vases C1880

19th century
For Sale by Aramis Antiques
Description

A pair of Royal Doulton Art Nouveau design vases c1880. These cylindrical vases display an Art Nouveau theme of naturalistic trailing roses and leaves. The roses and leaves are glazed in a soft pinks and greens, with off white tube lining to give a deeper three dimensional effect. The roses and foliage are set against a mottled background of blues and mauves, with the colour deepening towards the bases, for a more impactful effect. A typical Art Nouveau sinuous border runs around the neck of the vases. The bases are stamped for Royal Doulton and bear two potters’ marks, LB for LF Bowen and a separate R probably for Frank W Reader. So it is likely that two artists were involved with the creation of the vases. Excellent condition. No damage at all and beautiful colours and glaze.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Nouveau ceramics, prominent during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are characterised by organic lines, stylized floral motifs, and naturalistic forms inspired by nature.

These pieces were typically produced using stoneware or dense earthenware clay, finished with salt glazes, lead glazes, or raised tubelined enamel decoration to add texture.

Authentic examples often display stamped or impressed maker marks on the base, hand-drawn decoration, artist initials, and natural variations resulting from historical kiln firing.

Positioning a pair of ceramic vases on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or deep window sill provides balance, architectural interest, and organic colour tones to contemporary rooms.

Clean stoneware surfaces gently using a soft, dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth with water, avoiding chemical abrasives or prolonged immersion.
