Rare 19th Century Georgian Regency Pillar Moulded Glass Wine Carafe C1835

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A rare Georgian Regency glass wine carafe dating to c1835.

It features a wide pouring rim with a trumpet-shaped neck, leading down to a large triple annulated neck ring that provides a more secure grip. The main body is pillar-moulded and tapers down to a polished pontil.

Historical Context

The pillar moulding to the bowl was intended to help keep the contents cooler by reducing the transfer of ambient room temperature to the body of the vessel. This same design can be seen in pillar-moulded “Newcastle” type decanters, as well as in Scottish whisky measures, dating broadly to the 1830–1840 period.

We have handled many measures and decanters in this style; however, carafes of this type are very rare. Suitable for either wine or water, this example holds approximately a full bottle at 75cl. We cant recall seeing another example with the annulated collars.

Date & Origin

Pillar moulded glass carafes originated in the early 19th century, featuring thick vertical ribs formed by blowing glass into a primary mould before hand-shaping the upper neck and rim. Popular during the Georgian and William IV periods, this technique added structural ribbing and enhanced the light refraction of lead glass tableware.

Regency glass carafes were manufactured using heavy lead crystal glass, known for its density and light refraction. Glassmakers utilised a combination of partial moulding for the ribbed lower body and hand-applied glass rings fused around the neck to facilitate a firm grip during serving.

Authentic 19th-century pieces typically exhibit a ground or raw pontil mark on the underside of the base, minor asymmetry from hand-finishing, and age-appropriate wear on contact surfaces. Lead glass from this period also possesses significant weight and a subtle greyish tone under natural lighting.

Displaying a Georgian glass carafe on a timber sideboard, a polished brass drinks tray, or an open shelving unit adds historical texture. It functions as an active wine serving vessel, a decorative barware accent, or a vessel for single-stem florals.

Wash antique glass by hand using lukewarm water, mild dish liquid, and a soft cloth, avoiding automatic dishwashers and extreme temperature changes that cause thermal shock. To prevent clouding, dry the interior thoroughly using a lint-free cloth or an air dryer.
