19th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A very fine late Victorian cranberry glass biscuit barrel, dating to c1890-1910.

It has a beautifully rounded body in a rich, deep cranberry colour, decorated with an elaborate raised diamond pattern. Within each diamond is a wonderfully intricate arrangement of miniature geometric flower heads, creating a particularly attractive contrast between the bold moulded framework and the delicate floral decoration.

The pattern continues around the entire body and underneath the glass, terminating at a clear polished pontil.

It retains its original white metal collar, swing handle and removable lid.

Date & Origin

England, c1890-1910. Period of Queen Victoria.

Condition

Excellent, age-related wear as shown. No chips cracks or restoration.

Dimensions

Height: 18cm

Diameter: 13cm

Weight:868 grams

Historical Context

Cranberry glass became increasingly fashionable during the Victorian period, its distinctive rich pink and ruby tones produced through the addition of small quantities of gold compounds to the glass mixture.

By the closing decades of the 19th century, British glassmakers were producing an increasingly elaborate range of decorative glassware, combining traditional glassmaking techniques with intricate moulded patterns, cutting and surface decoration.

The Victorian fascination with ornamental glass extended well beyond drinking vessels, with biscuit barrels becoming popular additions to the domestic table and drawing room. Often fitted with metal collars, handles and lids, they combined everyday practicality with the decorative tastes of the period.

Victorian cranberry glass is a type of red-tinted blown glass created by introducing gold salts into molten glass batch. Popularised during the mid-to-late nineteenth century in Britain, it was frequently crafted into ornamental tableware and decorative vessels.

The deep red hue was achieved by adding trace amounts of gold chloride to the batch during melting. Items were generally hand-blown, often featuring mould-blown diamond patterns, surface etching, and fitted silver-plated rims and lids.

Authentic Victorian pieces often display minor hand-blown variations, polished pontil marks on the base, and age-appropriate wear to the silver plating. Genuine nineteenth-century examples feature rich, translucent colour that ranges from deep pink to ruby red.

A cranberry glass biscuit barrel can be displayed on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen dresser to introduce warm colour and historical detail. Pairing it with clear glassware or polished silver elements balances its saturated hue.

Hand wash the glass carefully using lukewarm water and mild dish soap, avoiding extreme temperature changes. Clean the metal mounts gently using a silver polishing cloth to protect the silver plating from excessive abrasive wear.
