18th Century Dutch Oak Two Door Cupboard

18th century
Description

This is a very smart, 18th century Dutch cupboard with real substance and beautifully deep mouldings framing the doors. There’s a confidence to its construction and proportions, softened by the warm timber and the character of its aged surface. The broad bun feet are a particularly charming finishing touch.

What we love is its sense of originality, the little variations and signs of use that make this feel grounded and shows its life handsomely.

Behind the two doors is useful storage for crockery, or the things you’d rather keep tucked away. Working lock and original key as well. Solid condition with no major issues.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century Dutch oak furniture is recognised for its sturdy proportion, functional design, and understated elegance. Typical features include deeply fielded or raised panel doors, substantial architectural mouldings, and turned bun feet.

These cupboards were predominantly crafted from solid European oak, utilising mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-planed panels. Metal fittings were generally forged from iron or cast in brass.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period woodworking, such as hand-sawn timber marks, irregular peg construction, natural shrinkage along timber joints, and age-consistent patination around handles and escutcheons.

A low Dutch cupboard acts as a grounding anchor in contemporary living or dining spaces, pairing well with minimal modern artwork, ceramic vessels, and neutral textile backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly to nourish the timber. Maintain stable room humidity and avoid direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent cracking.
