During the Victorian era, mahogany was widely favoured for its durability and rich grain, commonly crafted into bedside cabinets and chests featuring robust construction, simple moulding, and plinth bases.

Nineteenth-century examples feature frame-and-panel construction, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, brass hardware, and mahogany veneers applied over pine or oak secondary timbers.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, natural timber shrinkage along drawer bottoms, period-correct brass escutcheons, and signs of historic wear consistent with age.

Flanking a upholstered modern bed with a pair of matching mahogany chests adds balance, while adding contemporary ceramic table lamps creates a thoughtful contrast between historic wood and current design.

Maintain the original finish by dusting regularly with a soft microfiber cloth, applying a small amount of beeswax polish once annually, and keeping the timber clear of direct heat and strong sunlight.
