Longines Marine Chronometer Clock in Mahogany Gimbal Box 1920

1900 - 1920
Description

A handsome early–mid 20th-century Longines marine chronometer, housed in its original mahogany single-tier chronometer box with brass fittings. This would have been used aboard ships for precision timekeeping and navigation

Dial & Features

The white enamel dial is clean and crisp, marked:

LONGINES at 12 o’clock

“Chronometer”

Arabic numerals in bold black type

Blued steel spade hands

Subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock The dial layout and typography are characteristic of 1930s–1950s Longines navigational instruments, produced for commercial marine service rather than naval Admiralty contracts

Compagnie des Montres Longines, Francillon S.A. - or simply Longines - is a Swiss luxury watchmaker based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. Movement & Suspension

The chronometer is mounted in a brass bowl held within its gimbal suspension, allowing the mechanism to remain level aboard a moving vessel. The gimbal arms and locking mechanism appear intact, with original brass hardware showing good aged patination Mahogany Case

The box is crafted in solid mahogany with dovetailing at the corners, brass stop-hinges, and a front lock (key not visible). The interior of the lid shows remnants of the original instruction or maker’s label, now largely lost but still visible in outline — a common occurrence in working chronometers.

This 1920 maritime table clock takes the form of a Longines marine chronometer housed within a mahogany gimbal box with brass fittings. The piece presents a warm brown wooden exterior with dovetail joinery, a brass lock escutcheon on the front, and stop-hinges, alongside a brass bowl and gimbal mechanism holding the timepiece. The interior lid displays a torn paper label remnant glued to the dark wood surface, and the white dial exhibits black Arabic numerals, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds dial. Measuring 13 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the unit sits compactly upon an office desk or library table to serve as a functional desk clock.

A marine chronometer is a precision timekeeping instrument historically used aboard sea vessels to determine longitude through celestial navigation.

Antique marine chronometers generally feature brass clockwork mechanisms mounted within brass gimbals, encased inside solid mahogany or teak timber boxes for protection.

Authentic examples feature maker markings on the dial, serial numbers stamped on the brass movement and casing, a dual-axis gimbal suspension, and subsidiary dials for seconds or power reserve.

A marine chronometer serves as a functional decorative accent placed on an office desk, library bookshelf, or side table within classic, nautical, or dark academia interior schemes.

Position the wooden box away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, wipe the brass surfaces with a soft dry cloth, and have the internal mechanism serviced periodically by a qualified horologist.
