A late 19th-century Swiss folk art bulbous earthenware vase originates from Thoune pottery production. Finished with a cream glaze, the vessel showcases hand-painted floral slipware motifs in terracotta, blue, and green alongside intricate sgraffito detailing. Decorative bands incorporate scalloped borders and delicate bellflower motifs encircling the neck, body, and base. Dark brown linear accents outline the main registers and separate the horizontal decorative zones. The surface displays minor surface craquelure and subtle tonal variations inherent to its traditional manufacturing process. Measuring 30 cm by 20 cm by 20 cm, the object sits on a rounded base suitable for placement upon a living room sideboard top or an entryway console table. Adapting easily into an English country house interior scheme, it functions both as a standalone decorative display piece and as a converted table lamp base.

Thoune pottery, originating from the Heimberg and Thun regions of Switzerland during the late 19th century, is characterised by elaborate slipware decoration on earthenware clay. These ceramics typically display intricate hand-painted floral, geometric, and folk motifs using vibrant coloured slips.

Thoune pottery is crafted from local earthenware clay and decorated using slipware and sgraffito techniques. Artisans applied coloured liquid clays in layers, incising designs or painting floral patterns before sealing the piece with a clear glaze.

Authentic Thoune pieces feature characteristic cream, dark brown, or black grounds decorated with finely painted floral scrollwork, bellflowers, and geometric scalloped borders. Many items bear impressed or painted factory marks, numbers, or Thoune incised into the base.

Display the vase as a standalone accent piece on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf to highlight its detailed decoration. Pair it alongside contemporary ceramics or dark wood surfaces to allow the intricate folk patterns and rich colours to serve as a focal point.

Clean antique earthenware gently using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth without harsh detergents. Avoid submerging the piece in water or placing it in a dishwasher, as porous pottery can absorb moisture through crazed glazes.
