Pair of Mid-19th Century Painted Bedside Tables

19th century
Description

A charming and highly decorative pair of mid-19th century bedside tables, retaining particularly attractive period architectural detailing and subsequently finished in a softly distressed painted surface.

Each table is constructed with a original rectangular black marble top, providing a handsome contrast to the pale painted body beneath. The frieze incorporates a single drawer with decorative drop handle, set above a panelled cupboard door. The fronts are enriched with carved foliate decoration and fluted architectural uprights, giving the pair considerably more character than the plainer bedside cupboards commonly encountered from this period.

The cabinets are raised on painted bun feet, which sit comfortably with the overall design while giving the pieces a pleasing, slightly elevated stance.

The gently rubbed and time-worn painted finish allows traces of the underlying timber and earlier surface to show through, creating an appealing decorative quality. The dark tops retain visible age and surface marking, entirely sympathetic to their character and use.

A particularly useful pair, their restrained proportions make them ideal either side of a bed, while their combination of drawer and enclosed cupboard provides practical storage.

This pair of mid-19th century French Provincial bedside tables is constructed from painted wood and dark marble, finished in an off-white colour with a softly distressed treatment. Each rectangular cabinet incorporates a single drawer with a drop handle, a panelled cupboard door, fluted pilasters on the uprights, carved foliate decoration, and turned bun feet. The surfaces display visible wear, rubbed paint revealing underlying timber, and age markings on the marble tops. Every table measures 75 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. They provide practical bedside storage with a combination of a drawer and an enclosed cupboard, and sit comfortably either side of a bed in a bedroom setting.

Originating in 19th-century Europe, chevet tables or bedside cabinets were functional storage pieces designed for the bedroom. They typically featured a top surface for oil lamps, a small drawer for personal items, and an enclosed cupboard section to store night-time utensils before indoor plumbing became widespread.

These cupboards were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as pine, walnut, or oak, often finished with milk paint or painted washes. Marble slabs were frequently added as upper surfaces to prevent liquid stains and moisture damage to the underlying timber structure.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, historical wear patterns on original hardware, and authentic patination or layering in the painted finish. Inspecting the undersides and back panels typically reveals hand-sawn timber and antique fastening nails rather than modern screws.

Position them symmetrically alongside a bed to frame the room, pairing the distressed timber texture with tailored linen bedding. The natural stone tops provide a durable surface for contemporary lighting, ceramic vessels, or functional bedroom accessories.

Clean painted wooden surfaces with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, avoiding abrasive chemicals that strip historical paint layers. Marble tops should be wiped clean immediately after spills using pH-neutral soap and water to prevent etching from acidic liquids.
