This pair of French bedside tables dates from the period around 1880 and follows the Louis XVI style. Each piece is constructed from wood and metal with a painted grey finish, complemented by a variegated red marble top of a demi-lune shape. The design incorporates a single top drawer with a small dark knob, a panelled cabinet door below with corner leaf motifs and a central handle, fluted tapering legs, and carved vertical reeding along the front uprights. Visible signs of age include distressed paintwork showing wear along the edges and mouldings. The tables measure 74 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 36 cm deep. These bedside tables function practically as a matched left-and-right pair for flanking a bed in a bedroom setting, providing convenient surface space on the marble tops alongside enclosed storage within the cabinets and drawers. The neutral grey paint palette and classic proportions allow them to integrate easily into various bedroom interiors while offering functional bedside storage.

FAQs

Louis XVI style bedside tables feature neoclassical proportions, geometric symmetry, straight fluted legs, and marble tops, reflecting the design revival of classical antiquity in late 18th-century France.

Traditional French nightstands are constructed with solid hardwood frameworks, such as oak or beech, fitted with natural marble surfaces, metal hardware, and hand-painted distressed finishes.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-cut joinery, hand-carved wood details, underside tooling marks on the marble, and natural age-related patination on the paintwork and metal fittings.

A pair of demilune tables can frame a bed as matching nightstands or be positioned as symmetrical accent tables in a hallway, dining room, or formal reception space.

Clean marble surfaces using a neutral pH stone cleaner to avoid acid etching, while dusting the painted wooden framework regularly with a dry microfibre cloth away from direct heat sources.
