London City Antiques has dated this Georgian Mahogany Longcase Clock to the 18th Century.

The large arched brass dial is particularly striking, with Roman numerals, Arabic minute markings, subsidiary seconds, finely pierced steel hands and elaborate gilt-brass spandrels. The arch incorporates the strike/silent selector, while the maker’s plaque is clearly engraved “John Taylor, London”.

John Taylor was a respected London clockmaker working during the late 18th century, and surviving clocks by him are noted for their quality, decorative brass dials and well-made movements. The combination of maker, date, scale and specification makes this a particularly desirable Georgian longcase clock.

The case is constructed from beautifully figured mahogany, with a tall architectural hood, fluted columns with brass capitals, decorative brass finials and a long figured trunk door. The lower case is equally well proportioned, giving the clock an elegant and imposing silhouette.

At 253cm high, this is a substantial antique grandfather clock with wonderful presence. The warm colour and figuring of the mahogany contrast beautifully with the richly detailed brass dial, creating a refined and balanced appearance.

The quality of the dial is one of the strongest features of this clock. The gilt-brass decoration, strike/silent mechanism and eight-day movement elevate it above more standard Georgian longcase clocks, while the London maker adds further collector appeal.

A very fine and important antique Georgian longcase clock by John Taylor of London, combining superb scale, quality mahogany, an eight-day movement, strike/silent function and a highly decorative brass dial. A wonderful statement piece for a traditional interior, grand hallway, library or contemporary home.
