Description

This is a Georgian, English, hop and barley engraved ale jug dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1777, which is the date that appears on the jug.

The jug is in excellent condition for its age. This means of course that it shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the base.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter at the pouring rim. The bowl is moulded with four rings below the pouring rim and carries the engraved monogram "RC" above the date "1777" in a hop and barley cartouche. The jug is 13 cm (5.2 inches) across at its widest point (pouring spout to outside of the handle) and is 15 cm (6 inches) in height. The handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then finished off at the bottom of the bowl with a nicely fashioned curlicue. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration.

A pretty, period ale jug weighing in at 425 g. (~ 15 oz.).

A Georgian hop and barley ale jug is a lead glass vessel produced in 18th-century Britain, specifically decorated with copper-wheel engravings of hops and barley ears to denote its intended function for serving ale or beer.

These jugs were hand-blown from heavy lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided clarity and weight. The surface decoration was applied using copper-wheel engraving, and the handle was formed separately and applied while hot.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand production, such as minor air bubbles within the glass matrix, an applied handle with distinct attachment points, a polished pontil mark on the base, and slight structural asymmetries.

Place the jug on a sideboard, open shelving unit, or bar cart where direct or ambient light can highlight the transparent body and detailed wheel engraving.

Hand wash the jug using lukewarm water, a gentle liquid detergent, and a soft cloth. Dishwashers and extreme temperature changes must be avoided to prevent thermal shock and chemical clouding.
