Antique Pair Royal Bonn Franz Anton Mehlem Louis XVI Blue White Vases C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

A charming matched pair of antique Royal Bonn / Franz Anton Mehlem blue-and-white vases, dating to around 1900 and belonging to the factory’s Louis XVI series.

Of elegant small gourd-form outline, each vase is decorated in rich cobalt blue and white with romantic scenic cartouches depicting pastoral figures within wooded landscapes. The principal scenes are surrounded by dense scrolling floral and foliate ornament, with additional floral medallions decorating the sides.

The decoration has the refined transfer-printed character associated with Royal Bonn’s late-19th and early-20th-century production, with subtle tonal variation in the cobalt and attractive age-related glaze crazing visible on close inspection.

Both vases retain the characteristic crowned 1755 Royal Bonn mark to the bases together with the designation:

L.XVI

identifying the decoration as part of the Louis XVI series.

The crowned 1755 mark was used by Franz Anton Mehlem / Royal Bonn during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The number 1755 refers to the historic origins of pottery production at Bonn and is not the manufacture date of the vases.

Origin: Bonn, Germany

Period: Late 19th / early 20th century

Date: Circa 1890–1910

Royal Bonn ceramics produced by the Franz Anton Mehlem factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries frequently feature transferware designs, hand-painted details, and pastoral scenes executed in cobalt blue on ivory glazed backgrounds.

These pieces were typically crafted from fine earthenware or porcelain, coated in a light glaze, and decorated using transfer printing or underglaze painting with cobalt oxide pigments.

Authentic pieces generally display factory marks on the base, including the crown symbol, the text Royal Bonn, or the initials FM alongside impressed shape numbers.

Positioning a matching pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table creates visual balance and introduces classical patterning to both traditional and modern schemes.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid immersion in water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as moisture can enter glaze crazing over time.
