Georgian Rare Shaft and Globe Carafe or Decanter

Description

This is a rare Georgian, English, shaft and globe carafe or decanter dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750. These were among the earliest forms of carafes and decanters blown in the UK. It is actually a carafe as the neck has not been ground to take a stopper. The stopper has been polished in so that it might be used as a decanter.

The decanter is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the kicked-in base.

The decanter is of shaft and globe form and measures 14.5 cm (5.8 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The decanter is 25.5 cm (10.2 inches) in height without the stopper and 29 cm (11.6 inches) in height with the stopper inserted. The stopper is of traditional solid ball form containing multiple air tears. It is an excellent fit, and is of the correct type and metal. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collectors' sticker on the underside of the base.
