Georgian Rare Shoulder Carafe or Decanter with Five Lynn Rings

18th century
Description

This is a rare Georgian, Lynn-moulded, English, shoulder carafe or decanter dating from the second half of the 18th century, c1770. As there is no grinding to the neck for a stopper we assume that it is a carafe.

The carafe is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the base consistent with some 250 years of use. It has a polished out pontil mark on the underside of the base.

The carafe has a cylindrical body moulded with five Lynn rings and measures 8.5 cm (2.2 inches) in diameter at its widest point (the shoulders). The Lynn appellation arises from the belief that these distinctive carafes were blown in King's Lynn, Norfolk. They have also been called Norfolk glass in the past. The carafe is 21 cm (8.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is an old collectors' sticker on the underside of the base.

Lead glass weighing in at 580 g. (~ 1 lb. 4 oz.).

Lynn glass refers to mid-to-late 18th-century British glassware characterised by horizontal raised rings or bands around the body. Produced primarily in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, between 1760 and 1780, this distinctive molding technique was applied to wine glasses, carafes, and decanters.

Georgian carafes were free-blown or mold-blown from heavy lead crystal glass, often termed flint glass. Artisans shaped the body and neck by hand, forming raised horizontal rings while manipulating the hot vessel prior to annealing.

Authentic 18th-century decanters display irregular hand-blown proportions, a snapped or polished pontil scar on the base, and slight natural wear on the bottom rim. The glass often exhibits a characteristic weight, subtle grey or purple tint from lead content, and tiny trapped air bubbles.

Antique glass decanters and carafes can be styled on a dining sideboard, drinks trolley, or open kitchen shelving. Arranging vessels of varying heights creates an intriguing tabletop vignette that catches light naturally.

Antique glass should be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding extreme temperature changes that cause cracking. Internal clouding or staining should be treated gently with soft glass-cleaning brushes and specialized residue removers rather than harsh chemical abrasives.
