Giant Bracket Clock by Widenham of London

19th century
Description

An unusual giant ebonised bracket clock by this Clockmaker to the Admiralty

Featuring an 8 day double fusee movement striking the hours on a bell and repeating at will. The movement is in working order but will require a full overhaul and service before delivery. It will then be guaranteed for 3 years.

The silvered brass dial is currently in an ‘as found’ condition. This could be re-silvered as required.

The ebonised case is a giant version of the typically smaller 4 glass library case, which were made in large numbers around this period.

An unusual example

Note: Richard Widenham was a very fine maker and noted particularly for his chronometers winning the Admiralty Premium Trials in 1824. He worked at 6 East Street, Clerkenwell between 1830-35 and afterwards at 15 Lombard Street.

He subsequently advertised as 'Watchmaker to the Hon. Board of Admiralty. It’s quite possible that this clock may have been made for perhaps an Officer in the Admiralty or indeed for the actual Admiralty offices in London.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in seventeenth-century England, a bracket clock is a compact weight or spring-driven table clock designed to sit on a wall bracket, mantelpiece, or sideboard.

Georgian bracket clocks typically feature ebonised wood or mahogany cases, brass fittings, steel arbors, fusee movements, and engraved brass or silvered dials.

Authentic pieces feature hand-engraved maker signatures on the dial or backplate, square or arched silvered dials, brass fusee movements, and heavy timber casing with keyholes.

Position the clock centrally on a dark wood sideboard, marble fireplace mantelpiece, or inside a library bookcase to create a focal point against contemporary neutral walls.

Keep the clock away from direct heat sources and dampness, dust the case with a dry lint-free cloth, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced by a horologist every five to seven years.
