Description

A desirable Scottish longcase clock of good colour and proportions.

The 8 day duration movement strikes the hours on a bell and has a round silvered brass dial showing Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, seconds, date and matching blued steel hands. A rare strike/silent facility is found above the number XII. The makers name and place of work is shown to the centre of the dial, Green of Edinburgh.

The excellent quality mahogany veneered case has well figured veneers to both the trunk door and base. The base has small bracket feet which are typical of this area of Scotland and the period. The hood has a lockable glazed brass bezel and a plain broken arch top. C.1810

A longcase clock, commonly termed a grandfather clock, is a tall, floor-standing clock featuring a weight-driven movement and a long pendulum enclosed within a protective wooden case.

Longcase clocks were typically constructed using solid or veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, combined with brass movement plates and silvered or painted clock faces.

Authentic eighteenth and early nineteenth-century examples display hand-engraved dials, cast brass spandrels, hand-cut gear teeth within the movement, and timber joinery techniques indicative of the period.

Positioning a longcase clock in a hallway or dining room provides an architectural focal point, creating visual contrast when paired with neutral wall tones and minimalist furnishings.

Maintain stable humidity and keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and radiators, ensuring the case remains level and having the movement professionally serviced every five to seven years.
