Home Counties Longcase Clock by Lee of Great Marlow

18th century
Description

A good quality oak longcase of pleasing proportions.

Featuring an 8 day movement and striking the hours on a bell. The square dial with a silvered brass chapter ring, a matted centre showing engraved birds, date aperture and sunken seconds. Also with brass spandrels to each corner, blued steel hands and the makers name on a cartouche.

The light coloured oak case is typical of the period and the Home Counties area. The hood displays attached pillars with wooden capitals, a caddy top to the hood and blind fretwork. The trunk features a long door and stands on a plain base with a double plinth. C.1775

An excellent example.

Note. Being a recent new arrival this clock will require a full service to the movement and some minor restorations to the case will also need to be carried out before delivery. Please contact us if you are interested in this clock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, floor-standing, weight-driven clock encased in wood that was developed in the late 17th century.

Traditional longcase clocks feature cases constructed from solid timber such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, housing brass dials, steel movements, and lead or cast iron weights.

Authentic period examples typically feature brass dials with cast spandrels, hand-engraved maker names, crown-wheel or anchor escapements, and period joinery including hand-cut dovetails and pegged wooden cases.

Position the clock as a focal architectural piece in a hallway, stair landing, or dining room to introduce vertical height and period texture alongside contemporary furnishings.

Keep the wooden case in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat, apply beeswax polish annually, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every five to seven years.
