Antique Burr Walnut Cocktail Drinks Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb antique burr walnut cocktail drinks cabinet, dating from around the 1920’s period.

The quality is outstanding, the top section is burr walnut, the base is solid walnut & the insides of the cabinet are sycamore.

There is also a mirrored pull out shelf for serving drinks. The doors have etched brass escutcheons and we have a key.

There are fine carvings all over this cabinet, on the top edges and in particular on the base section, which are incredibly detailed, so please enlarge all the images to appreciate all the fine details. This cabinet is a very solid well made piece of furniture and is quite heavy.

Fortunately, it separates into two sections for easier transportation.

The condition is excellent for its age, we have just had it re-polished. There is just some minor wear and patina remaining here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cocktail cabinets gained popularity in the 1920s and 1930s as dedicated home storage for glassware, spirits, and bar accessories. Often crafted with decorative veneers and elaborate stands, they served as a focal point for entertaining guests in private residences.

These cabinets feature highly figured burr walnut veneers applied over a solid timber frame, paired with ornate brass strap hinges, escutcheons, and backplates. The carved base and turned legs are usually constructed from solid walnut or beech to support the upper cupboard.

Authentic early to mid-20th-century pieces feature hand-applied veneers, solid brass hardware with natural oxidisation, dovetail drawer joints, and interior details such as mirror-lined cupboards or built-in mixing shelves.

Position the cabinet against a neutral feature wall to highlight the rich timber figure and brass details. Incorporate modern glass accessories on top or flank it with minimalist lighting to balance the intricate traditional carving with contemporary lines.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the grain to maintain the timbers sheen. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent veneer cracking or fading.
