A superb quality Pair of Demilune Semicircle / French Belle Epoque Satinwood Console / Occasional Tables with grey marble tops having fine Satinwood quilted veneers, the elegant square tapering legs are united with a semi circular shelves each table has a useful Mahogany lined drawer with a makers metal plaque which reads - Albert Goumain, Meubels D Art & Decoration, 54. Rue de Charonne, Paris. The apron and drawer fronts have quality cast Gilt Bronze mounts cast in the form of Ribbons and Swags , Roundels & Handles the feet are also finished with Gilt Bronze feet.

Albert Goumain / Art and decoration furniture Paris. Albert Goumain (1866-1956) was a cabinetmaker and decorator based at 54, rue de Charonne in Paris. He was the heir to the cabinetmaking business 'Goumain frères'.

FAQs

An etagere table originated in France during the late eighteenth century as an open-tiered piece of furniture created to display decorative items. Constructed with multiple shelves, these tables adapted to various stylistic eras including Louis XVI and Neoclassical periods.

Makers constructed these tables using a timber frame veneered in satinwood, topped with fitted marble slabs, and decorated with chased gilt bronze ormolu mounts. The combination of light timber, cold stone, and metallic gilding created structural and visual contrast.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marble slabs with period bevels, hand-cut timber veneers, and cast ormolu mounts attached via threaded screws or pins. The reverse and underside typically display hand-planed joinery and natural oxidisation on the timber.

Position a pair on either side of a fireplace, sofa, or entrance doorway to add structured elevation. Use the open lower tiers to display books or ceramics while keeping the top marble surface available for functional lighting.

Dust the satinwood veneer regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to prevent drying. Clean gilt bronze mounts using a dry soft bristle brush to remove dust, avoiding liquid cleansers that strip period gilding.
