Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian three train longcase clock is a tall, weight-driven floor clock produced during the early 20th century. The term three train refers to the movement having three separate gear mechanisms: one for timekeeping, one for striking the hour, and one for playing quarter-hour chimes.

These clocks are typically constructed with solid mahogany or oak cabinets, frequently featuring decorative veneers, crossbanding, and carved embellishments. The movement components are made of brass and steel, while dials often combine cast brass spandrels, silvered chapter rings, and painted moonphase displays.

Authentic Edwardian examples generally exhibit neoclassical revival proportions, dark polished timber, and complex horological features such as chiming mechanisms or moonphase dials. Inspection of the movement reveals hand-turned brass arbors, heavy cast weights, and period construction details inside the case.

Place the clock in an entrance hall, landing, or main reception room where its vertical proportions act as an architectural focal point. Pairing dark timber cases with contemporary light wall colours or minimalist furnishings creates an engaging contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern design.

Keep the wooden case away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or lacquer cracking. Dust the exterior regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax annually, while ensuring the mechanical movement is professionally cleaned and oiled every five to seven years.
