Brief Description:
A particularly attractive pair, each vase has an elegant tall baluster form, with a gently flared foot rising through a slender waist to a rounded shoulder and broad everted rim.
The bodies are finished in a wonderfully subtle mottled olive-green glaze, displaying the attractive tonal variations for which Doulton's Lambeth stoneware became so admired.
Each vase is embellished with striking raised stylised floral motifs, very much in keeping with the emerging Art Nouveau taste of the period. The elongated stems and leaves rise vertically through the body, beautifully complementing the tall, sinuous form of the vases.
Further decoration appears around the lower sections, where a series of small applied circular motifs in contrasting dark blue and cream glazes provide an attractive accent against the muted green ground.
The combination of the organic form, naturalistic decoration and subdued earthy colouring gives the pair a wonderfully distinctive Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau character.
Dating to around 1900, they were produced during one of the most celebrated periods of artistic production at the Royal Doulton Lambeth works, when the factory became internationally renowned for its innovative and highly decorative art pottery.
Most importantly, these have survived together as a beautifully matched pair, making them particularly effective when displayed either side of a mantelpiece, upon a sideboard or within a collection of British Art Pottery.
At 23.3 cm tall, they are an excellent display size: substantial enough to have presence without being overly large.
A very attractive and highly decorative pair of Royal Doulton Lambeth Art Nouveau stoneware vases, displaying wonderful period colouring, elegant proportions and tremendous decorative appeal.
