Brief Description:
Dating to the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1880–1910, this impressive Continental piece stands at a substantial 39.3 cm (15.5 inches) tall and takes its inspiration from the richly decorated Italian Renaissance ceramics of the 16th century.
The baluster-shaped faience body is beautifully decorated in a traditional palette of cobalt blue, creamy white and rich yellow, with intricate scrolling foliage, grotesque ornament and classical Renaissance-inspired motifs.
Taking centre stage is a large circular medallion containing a classical female figure within a landscape, surrounded by concentric decorative borders. Further painted masks, figures and scrolling ornament continue around the body, giving the vase tremendous visual interest.
The ceramic body is complemented wonderfully by its elaborate bronze or bronzed-metal mounts. To either side are tall scrolling handles terminating in finely modelled classical female masks, while the vase is raised upon an impressive fluted pedestal.
Particularly attractive is the ornate base, which incorporates winged female or sphinx-like figures, scrolling openwork decoration and paw feet. These sculptural mounts give the piece a wonderfully architectural quality and considerably enhance its Renaissance Revival appearance.
The combination of colourful faience and richly modelled metalwork makes this an exceptionally decorative piece, equally suited to a period interior, grand entrance hall, drawing room or an eclectic contemporary setting.
At nearly 40 cm tall, it has excellent presence without being overwhelmingly large and displays beautifully from all angles.
